The position of the Catholic Church is that life is sacred - a unique gift from God. The Church opposes abortion where the life of a child is ended in the womb, and euthanasia which is the ending of a life before natural death. We believe that all life should be cherished at all times.

To assist those experiencing the extremely difficult circumstances of life, the Church encourages practical initiatives to help those in need,; including palliative care for the terminally ill and support for mothers-to-.be

Official Church Response to Abortion

“God, the Lord of life, has entrusted to men the noble mission of safeguarding life, and men must carry it out in a manner worthy of themselves. Life must be protected with the utmost care from the moment of conception: abortion and infanticide are abominable crimes” (Vatican Council II, Gaudium et spes, n.51).

As we all know, in the space of just one week at the end of June, MPs voted to decriminalise abortion up to birth and to legalise assisted suicide. These recent events have been a result of determined efforts by activists eager to expand the culture of death. Sadly, the pro-life movement simply do not have enough people active in the range of pro-life activities to contend successfully in the struggle for pro-life values. However, SPUC are as determined as ever to defeat abortion and assisted suicide and believe this can be done by mobilising adequate pro-life support. SPUC therefore urgently need to build up the critical mass of people necessary to effect real and lasting protection for unborn children and vulnerable people at the end of life. To Join the Fightback all parishioners are encouraged to complete an expression of an interest in SPUCs work, by completing a postcard at the back of the Church today. The postcards will be collected from the back of the Church and send to SPUC at no cost to you.

The Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC) are holding its annual White Flower Collection this weekend. Please be as generous as you can to help the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children, to defend unborn babies and their mothers. The success of the White Flower Collection is founded on the compassion and generosity of faithful churchgoers in parishes across the United Kingdom. SPUC is grateful for the unapologetic defence of unborn babies and vulnerable people that the teaching of the Catholic Church provides. At St. Teilo’s you are able to make a donation using your credit/debit card at the Electronic Donation Station.

This teaching has been presented in numbers 2270-2273 in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, in these terms:

«Human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception. From the first moment of his existence, a human being must be recognized as having the rights of a person - among which is the inviolable right of every innocent being to life “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you” (Jer. 1:5). “My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately wrought in the depths of the earth” (Psalm 139:15).
