White Fathers Appeal – This Sunday

Webmaster • September 6, 2024

We welcome Cardinal Michael Fitzgerald M.Afr. O.B.E. to the parish this weekend. The Cardinal will be making an appeal on behalf of the Missionaries of Africa, more commonly known as the White Fathers. His Eminence, one of three British Cardinals, is originally from Walsall and has been a member of the White Fathers for almost 70 years.

Cardinal Fitzgerald was ordained as titular Archbishop of Nepte by Pope Saint John Paul the Second in 1992 and for many years was President of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue. He was awarded the OBE for interfaith and interchurch partnerships in the Queen’s New Year Honours List in 2022 and currently is a member of the White Fathers community which has pastoral care for the parish of St. Vincent de Paul in the centre of Liverpool.

The White Fathers are an international team of priests. brothers and lay associates from Africa, Britain and many countries around the world. Any ministry which has a real relationship with Africa, no matter in what part of the world it may be, is considered by the Missionaries of Africa to be within the scope of their apostolate. Through parish work, building up small Christian communities, working with the media involvement in justice and peace, agriculture, seminary training, education and social welfare, the Missionaries of Africa aim to work in partnership with the Church in Africa and above all else to help build up the leadership of the Churches.

Donations can be made to the White Fathers appeal via the second collection this weekend or via the Electronic Donation station at the back of St. Teilo’s or online at

The joy that fills the Church at the birth of Jesus is celebrated throughout the Christmas season. The Church, as a continuation of the Christmas Feast, celebrates the Octave of Christmas, that is, the eight days between Christmas and New Year’s Day as a special celebration, with each day celebrated with prayer based on the Angels’ message to the Shepherds, the Gloria. Unlike our society, which seems to see December 25th as the end of the Christmas season, for us, December 25th is the beginning of Christmastime. These days between Christmas and New Year see many people taking leave, which is a great opportunity to spend more time with the Lord and come to a Christmas Octave Mass. During this week, we will celebrate the feasts of St. Stephen on the 26th , St. John the Apostle on the 27th and the Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph next Sunday. This all culminates in the celebration of Mary, the Mother of God, on New Year’s Day.
