Our Parish Priest

Canon John Griffiths, known as Fr. John, became Parish Priest of St. Teilo’s with Our Lady of Lourdes on Wednesday, June 30th, 2021.


Canon Griffiths was born in Cwmbach, Aberdare, and following his initial attendance at St Margaret's Primary School, he commenced secondary education at Bishop Hedley High School, Merthyr Tydfil. On leaving school he worked for a period at a Dunlopillo, Hirwaun. His work involved making foam for car seats and beds, as a junior laboratory assistant. He commenced his pre-seminary training and preparation for the priesthood initially at St. Mary's College Aberyswyth, and then Canon Griffiths continued his studies at All Hallows College, Dublin.


During his studies, Canon Griffiths ministered as a Deacon in St. Francis Xavier Parish, Hereford, before being ordained a Priest of the Archdiocese at St. David's Cathedral on the 18th June 1983 by Bishop Mullins.  He then served as an assistant Priest in St. Dyfrig's Treforest, and at Our Lady and St. Patrick’s, Maesteg.


Parish Priest:  Treochy and Ferndale (1988-1993), Abertillery with Lanhilleth and Brynmawr (1993-1996).

He was appointed Parish Priest for the Parish of Treochy and Ferndale. Following this appointment, he became Parish Priest in Abertillery with Lanhilleth and Brynmawr.


Parish Priest St. Helen's Caerphilly (1996-2012)

In 1996 Canon Griffiths was appointed Parish Priest of St. Helen's Caerphilly, where he was also designated Dean of Pontypridd and District in 1999 (later elected in 2001). During his time at St. Helens, in 2008, he was  appointed to the Cathedral Chapter.

From 2004-2013 he was also appointed Trustee for the Archdiocese of Cardiff.


Our Lady of the Angels Cwmbran and St. Davids, Pontnewydd. (2012-2021)

Canon Griffiths was installed as Parish Priest in Our Lady of the Angels Cwmbran and St. Davids, Pontnewydd in 2012, following his time in Caerphilly.
