Day for Life Collection – This weekend

Webmaster • June 14, 2024

Today the Church celebrates the ‘Day for Life’. This is the day in the Church’s year dedicated to raising awareness about the meaning and value of human life at every stage and in every condition.

The Church teaches that life is to be nurtured from conception to natural death. In England and Wales, the Day for Life is celebrated on the third Sunday of June each year. This year it falls today. The theme is The Lord is my Shepherd – Compassion and Hope at the End of Life. A debate on end-of-life issues has been in the headlines in recent months with calls for assisted suicide being expressed, especially by celebrities, a view that opposes the Catholic view that life is a gift and that we are called to care for others at the end of their lives.

Father George, a Hospital Chaplain, has been asked by the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales to write a reflection on the gift of accompanying the dying. It is well worth a read: https://www.cbcew.org.uk/day-for-life-message-2024/

A collection will be taken after Mass this weekend for The Day for Life Fund which provides financial assistance to organisations working to support the Church’s mission to protect human life from conception to natural death. Please be generous.

Parishioners from St. Teilo’s are continuing to collaborate with the team who operate the Night Shelter at St. Mary of the Angels, Canton. In addition to the overnight accommodation, they offer the team now do a food run for the homeless once a month. Unlike the food we collect for families in the area, the needs of the food run are for the kinds of food that are appealing to young, often male, people on the street. Those who benefit from this provision are especially seeking fizzy drinks, chocolate bars, small individual cakes and crisps. If you are able to donate such items for the homeless, please leave them in the box at the back of the Church.
